OTTAWA, February 28, 2018 – Canada’s most recently appointed Senators, Robert Black and Marty Deacon, both from Ontario, have joined the Independent Senators Group (ISG). Today, ISG Facilitator Senator Yuen Pau Woo and ISG Deputy Facilitator, Senator Raymonde Saint-Germain, formally welcomed Senators Deacon and Black into the Senate’s largest group, which now has 43 members.

Senator Marty Deacon (Waterloo) is a passionate supporter of sport at all levels. A dedicated volunteer, she is a coach, a board member of both national and international associations, and was appointed Canada’s Chef de Mission for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India. She has also spent a quarter-century in education working in elementary schools all the way through to universities.

Senator Robert Black (Centre Wellington), is a respected leader in Ontario's agricultural community, who served as the CEO of the Rural Ontario Institute, a board member for the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame, and has also been involved in the 4-H youth organization for more than four decades.

“Senators Marty Deacon and Robert Black have dedicated their careers to making Canada a better place to live, be it for athletes, students or the agricultural community. They will continue to do this for all Canadians in their role as senators. The ISG is extremely proud to welcome two such distinguished individuals to our group,” said Senator Woo, ISG Facilitator.

“It is a privilege to be appointed to the Senate of Canada and have the opportunity to sit as a member of the Independent Senators Group. I look forward to representing the province of Ontario and serving our country,” said Senator Robert Black.

“It is not only a great honor for me to have the opportunity to serve our nation, but also an exciting time to be in the Senate—at a time when it is undertaking important measures to modernize itself. I look forward to learning and contributing as an independent Senator by joining the ISG,” said Senator Deacon.
