ISG Welcomes Senator LaBoucane-Benson

Today the Independent Senators Group (ISG) welcomes Senator LaBoucane-Benson (AB) bringing the total membership to 53.

An Albertan of Métis decent, Senator Patti LaBoucane-Benson has dedicated her career to bettering life for Indigenous peoples, Albertan youth and all Canadians. Celebrated as a role model in the Indigenous community, Senator LaBoucane-Benson has worked in multiple roles for BearPaw Research focusing on applied research to increase Indigenous peoples’ awareness of their rights and responsibilities in the current justice system. She also holds a Ph.D. in Human Ecology, with a concentration in Indigenous family resilience.

“Senator LaBouchane-Benson’s decision to join the ISG family means that the Senate benefits from another colleague who believes in achieving a non-partisan chamber of sober second thought,” said Senator Yuen Pau Woo, Facilitator of the ISG. “Her unique perspective and wealth of experience will shape her individual work as a senator. She has dedicated her career to improving the life of Canadians and will continue to do so in the Upper Chamber.”

Senator LaBoucane-Benson’s choice to become a member of the ISG means that that the Group now holds 4 of 6 of Alberta’s seats in the Upper Chamber.

Established in 2016, The Independent Senators Group (ISG) is committed to a non-partisan Senate and the modernization of the Upper House of Canada’s Parliament. With 53 members, the ISG is the largest parliamentary group in the Senate. Composed of independents not affiliated with any political caucus, ISG Senators work cooperatively but act independently.

The ISG’s Facilitator is Senator Yuen Pau Woo (BC) and the Deputy Facilitator is Raymonde Saint-Germain (QC), each elected by members on a two-year term (until 2019). ISG senators were appointed over the years by five different Prime Ministers, with most of the current membership selected through The Independent Advisory Board for Senate appointments process.
