OTTAWA, April 16, 2026 – As the Independent Senators Group (ISG) marks its tenth year, we are taking the opportunity to have a thoughtful reflection of our internal methods to ensure we continue to serve Canadians in the current political environment.
Our diversity of thought and experience is the foundation of our effectiveness and the reason why senators joined and continue to be active members of the ISG. A group grounded in independence and diverse perspectives will naturally engage in rigorous discussion and this is essential to maintaining high standards in legislative review and is a hallmark of the ISG.
As a unified group under the leadership of Senator Moncion, the ISG’s focus remains clear: to provide careful, independent scrutiny of legislation and propose constructive amendments while recognizing the mandate of the elected chamber.
“Speculation about division overlooks the reality of who we are and how we work. This week, members of the ISG came together with clarity and unity of purpose, reaffirming our commitment to strengthening our foundation. I want to thank my colleagues for their continued commitment, professionalism, and the constructive spirit they bring to our group,” said Senator Lucie Moncion, facilitator of the ISG.
The ISG is proud of our role in helping build a more independent and less partisan institution. We believe this has been a positive development for the Senate. We are committed to moving forward to further this important mission in the interest of Canadians from coast to coast to coast.
